So I started going to a different gym, and they have a bag hanging, one thats about 4-5' tall, as well as a small speed bag. Dont know about their technical terms. Anyways, it seemed like a fun way to get some cardio done, but I dont know a thing about a thing. Can someone throw in some instructions or pointers.
well man, i assume it's a heavy bag if you say it's 4-5' tall. And you can basically just go nuts on a heavy bag.
But if you want to work a heavy bag in a gym then i would suggest knowing about 4 punches and throwing them in a couple different combos.
And vash, im sorry if I assume you're a complete newbie, but i really don't know any better.
1. Jab
Most important. http://youtube.com/watch?v=m4MWdxLliLc
you can learn the ways to throw it, how to double jab, and all the other fun that comes with it.
3. Hook
can't find a good video of it, but I only looked on youtube for a bit.
You can also look for throwing the hook with the other hand(power hand).
Work on those, and watch a couple boxing footwork vids on youtube as well. And don't worry, just those 4 punches will tire you out pretty quick on a heavy bag. http://youtube.com/watch?v=0KYGFawp14c
ps. i can't tell you anything about the speed bag as i have never used one. I never did boxing for cardio, i did it to learn to fight. And I was always told by my coaches that the speed bag was mainly for cardio, and for show. It doesn't mimic any punches, thus it was not worth doing.
You might want to try some shadow boxing at home before you head to the gym and start wailing on the bag for all to see. It will help you get you technique a bit before you actually try to hit something.
To add, once you start using your body to throw punches, you'll get a good ab workout as well. The heavy bag can just about constitute a workout in itself if you put everything behind your punches. Keep your fist in a direct line with your forearm, and focus on hitting with your middle through pinkie fingers so you don't break anything. Exhale as you make contact, and you'll get a workout.
