Cheney shoots hunting mate

US Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a man during a weekend hunting trip in south Texas.

The victim, identified as Harry Whittington, 78, is reported in good condition in a Corpus Christi hospital after being hit with buckshot on Saturday while hunting quail with Mr Cheney.

Mr Cheney sprayed Whittington, an Austin lawyer, with shotgun pellets while hunting for quail at about 5.30pm (local time), the local newspaper Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported.

The incident took place at the Armstrong Ranch in Kenedy County, where Mr Cheney is a frequent visitor.

Katharine Armstrong, owner of the ranch, said Mr Whittington was in good condition after being taken to hospital by ambulance.

"The vice-president has spoken with Mrs Whittington and is visiting with Mr Whittington today," Lea Anne McBride, spokeswoman for the vice president, was quoted as saying.

CNN television, citing a witness, said Whittington had "never lost consciousness".

The vice-president would return to Washington later today, NBC News reported.

Ms Armstrong said Mr Cheney, 65, had turned to shoot quail that had just been flushed, accidentally peppering one side of Mr Whittington's body. Ms Armstrong said Mr Cheney had been unaware Whittington had approached him from behind.

"Nobody wants this to happen, but it does," she said.

Mr Cheney's secret service agents tended to the injured man before paramedics arrived, Ms Armstrong said.

Officials with the Kenedy County Sheriff's Office had helped investigate the incident, the paper said.

I'm not a hunter, but how in the hell do you confuse a 78 year old man with a quail? Cheney probably shot him in the arse because the old guy was going to expose Halliburton secrets.

Hi All-

This was truly an unfortunate accident. It's a good thing that the injuries were extremely minor and everybody is fine.

One of the downfalls of hunting unless you have someone you have hunted with for the past 3 to 13 yrs & you both are safe hunters.

Maybe I am missing something, but is this really even news? If this were to happen to any normal person it would probably barely be mentioned even at the local level, nevermind national.

I give this story a great big:

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all of fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomanical, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. - Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

A lot of people, especially the east coast liberal news types, think bird hunting is like a shooting range where everyone is shooting straight forward. I've been pheasant hunting where we walked right by a bird and he takes off behind us. Everyone turns and starts shooting. I've heard no. 8 shot whizz by my ear more that once. I don't bird hunt anymore. Trap and skeet are a lot safer.
