Police on endangered species list

Police officers dragged by cars

TWO police officers have been hit by vehicles and dragged for several metres in separate incidents in Queensland, Australia.

In one incident, a motorcycle officer was deliberately driven into after he began following a stolen car in Southport, on the Gold Coast, about 8.45pm (AEST) yesterday.

Police said the car went into a driveway, and then, with its lights off, accelerated, reversed, and swung into the front of the motorcycle.

The officer was knocked down and dragged for a short distance, a spokesman said. He was taken to hospital with bruising. The car was later found burned out in nearby Labrador.

Police said another officer in Townsville was taken to hospital after an incident earlier.

The officer was patrolling the Willows Shopping Centre car park when he allegedly saw a vehicle doing a burnout about 7.10pm (AEST). A police spokesman said the officer approached the car, which drove off with the officer's hand inside.

"The officer was dragged several metres and the vehicle hit his left," the spokesman said.

He was treated at Townsville Hospital for a leg injury. The car was later found burned out, police said.

A 19-year-old Townsville man has been charged with serious assault and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. He will appear in court on April 22.

Exclamation Ouch!

Ouchy! One of the first things that we were taught in the academy, in reference to dealing with cars were....#1: Never reach inside for any reason unless it is a matter of life or death...#2: Get out of their way because they are bigger and faster than you and they will win in an altercation!......LAPD just went to a "no shoot" policy on vehicles being used as weapons!?! Just doesn't make any sense if you are justified and fighting for your life.

Hopefully the officers involved are okay. Sounds like both vehicles may have been stolen?

The first car was stolen and I'd say the second was also.

Cops here don't fire their weapons too often. If I were a cop, I'd be using my gun if I was in a situation that warranted it.

Not here. Its pretty regular for them to shoot the dog in the front yard when coming to check on a warrant (even if the warrant something like failure to appear for a seatbelt). Last time they shot a poodel (sp?).

Endlesswav's is starting to convince me that its not a global phenomena... just the cops around here.

It's always easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all of fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomanical, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. - Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion
