What's up with these "Find out anything about anyone" e-mails I'm getting??? What a bunch of crap. I've never seen this particular one before, and all of a sudden I've gotten about 5 of them, just today.

It's all the same text, but from different "senders". Of course, you can't reply to them, because they get spit right back at you...

Anyone else received a barrage of this crap today?

BTW, Yes, I get junk like that. You know where it comes from? Posting on Usenet. They've got programs that scan postings for email addresses and generate mass-mail lists from that. I stopped posting on Usenet for that reason.

Well, I've never once posted on Usenet. But obviously something I did caused all that junk to arrive all the same day. So far today, I haven't received any of it...

So what's up with not being able to respond to those "senders"... I mean, I can't personally send out an e-mail anonymously. It's like the spammers have "call blocking" or something! ARRRRR!

Its actually quite simple. In the properties for their email setup, they put in a bogus return address. Outlook express has these settings under Tools, Accounts, settings. Other mass mailing programs allow you to specify all of the information also, so that the real email address never shows up.

I get quite a bit of spam. Some of it may be from previous postings on Usenet, or public web pages, but some of it is from spammers just grabbing an Intel mass mail account and spamming the whole frikkin corporation.

One thing to remember: If it says "reply to blah blah to remove", don't do it. Some spam programs VERIFY thier email addresses by you doing this. When you think you are being removed, you are actually verifying a valid email address to spam.

Best tactic is to ignore them. If you get a bunch, contact your ISP (or IT department if at work). They can help track down the culprits and beat the shit out of them. Well, that's what I would like them to do. Unfortunatly, we have laws about that they tell me.
