You have to keep it alive after you hit it, but try to have it deformed. The really deformed ones are very sought after and turn over a nice coin.

I carry a bag on my bike for this reason, just scoop'em up and then when a cage cuts you off, you have some nice ammo. (especially fun with convertables)
