removing damaged cover

I need to replace the alternator cover on my F4i.I'm hesitant to remove it because the first step my service manual recommends is removal of the throttle body. After looking over the procedure I can tell I'd be in way over my head. The next step is to disconnect the wire from the alternator to the battery. That is doable for me.
I'm wondering why the throttle body has to come off at all.Is that absolutely necessary?

Pick up virtue from everyone
