Unhappy Backfires and will not start - Ducati SS800

Hello all,

I am not a new rider but I am new to attempting to fix my own bike. I use my bike to commute to work (so it gets rode a lot). This morning my bike just would not start. This issue has been cropping its head up for the past 6 weeks but, normally starts after a few minutes.

Its not the battery....I am sure of that. It attempts to start, then eventually backfires. Does anyone know what the possible cause of this is? Is it the spark plugs? I had a full tune up in February of this year (spark plugs, air filter, etc.). The bike was then transported from NY to FL. Any help would be greatly appreciated (I hate driving my car to work....help!).

Thanks,

Walter

Thumbs up

What year is the bike?

1. Could be the spark plug caps (the originals are prone to going bad).
2. Bad plugs (I've seen plugs go bad right out of the box).
3. Bad igniters (They will act up Intermittently)
4. You might need to have the valves adjusted.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

P. S. Unless you are a certified mechanic, don't even think of adjusting the valves yourself.

A few ccs short of a full litre.

Talking It Started

Well after taking in a days worth of information on the net and considering the suggestions give here. I finely got it started at around 2:00am this morning. It appears to be that I need a new battery. I am sure my close to dead spark plugs and dirty air filter did not help the situation.

Lesson learned: always look at the simple stuff first. I did not think I neglected it that much....LOL.

Thanks for your help!
