Angry Dear Site Owner,

G'day, mate!

I've logged-on this morning to discover the new advertising banner down the right-hand-side of the screen. Listen, I know the site's got to make money by selling advertising space and I'm all for it. What's bugging me are three things:

1) The placement. Is it really necessary to have them on the side of the page? It's flamin' annoying having sh*t flicking onto the screen right there all the time.

2) Having the things downloading all the time. In the time it's taken me to write this post, I've lost count of the number of ads downloaded!! Thank God I'm at work today. My computer at home is on a crappy old dial-up service. This constant downloading is going to make chatting while at home an absolute nightmare!

3) As one who has suffered from seizures in the past, let me tell you, the constant flashing of the jokes ad to the right of screen is making me feel ill. Even my cursor flashes super-fast when the jokes ad is there.

These things are, IMO, to the detrement of this fine forum.

So, please, at least p*ss the ads off to the top or bottom of the page and get rid of the constant downloading. I'm happy for ONE ad to download when I open a page. Also, with the ads at top or bottom of screen, I can at least scroll my screen so that I can't see them, though it won't fix my hyperactive cursor...

Yours,

Jason (cookeetree).

Cookee, I am wth you 100% on this one. What makes it even worse is that in addition to the ads, it still pulls up the popup ads!

Mike, this new ad setup realy is not going to work.

A suggestion, why don`t you offer up some solutions to the cost issue; pay site, banner ads, popup ads, etc and post a poll. Let the members decide.

Thanks, mate. I only noticed this afternoon that I was still getting pop-ups as well as the new banner. I think it's fair to say it's been pretty unpopular across the board.

Obviously, I've never met Mike, but I'm sure he's a reasonable bloke who'll listen to the people who frequent this site. I'd be happy to vote on any suggestions he (or SBW members) might have on how we can keep this board the incredible place that it is.

I agree i hate the banners and pop ups i understand they need to advertise but there must be another way instead of that large banner up the side.

Well, I sure do appreciate the feedback!

Here is where we are:

- We have made some strong relationships in the industry to offer you a lot of new features and best of all the chance to win free stuff. Pirelli provides great rubber here every month. We want more participation by users, so the banner on the side may bring it to your attention

- We will also be using this area to promote the front part of the site - the magazine and our new movie section being released.

- 90%+ of the users are on 1024x resolution, so to pick 160px to the right... it ain't gonna kill ya.

- As for the popUnders... doesn't everybody have a popup blocker? I let them pop for me, but they are underneath and NOT like the porn stuff that you can't close... just click it and it closes. Also, we serve about 1,000 popunders a day MAX. I'm open to replacing the revenue... if a few members are willing to contribute $25. a month... I'm open

Just keep in mind that my goal is to make this the best site - Only with your help can I do that!

Next month we should have a Huge prize for a FREE contest!

Thanks for taking the time to address our concerns.

As I initially said, I can understand the need to showcase sponsors. However, I think the response from members in the last 24 hours shows that the side banner is not well received. Top or bottom, no drama. Having it on the side clutters the screen, regardless of res (I adjusted mine to 1152 x 864 to try it and it's still annoying).

I've got a pop-up blocker at home, but not on my work computer (don't ask me why they haven't installed one). Anyway, pop-ups I can handle. Click on them and they're gone. The new side banner is a whole different ballgame. The constant downloading of ads, while one page is open, means that I will not be using the forum when I'm at home.

The prizes you guys give away are incredible but, no offence, are of no use to me since I live in Aus.

I'd be willing to pay a yearly subscription fee of, say AUD$50 (US$42), but that's about it. Much as I love this forum, I really have more important things to put my money into.

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to explain things...

Thanks for explaining Mike. The popups are easy to block. I enjoyed the reasons why the ads are there. You could have advertising ALL over the site taking up pixels everywhere and it ain't gonna kill us. But it doesn't get around the fact that it sucks and is irritatingly taking up space anyway, not to mention distracting.
