Beer spilled in derailment

By Luan Akin, CBS4
May 23, 2007

A BNSF train carrying beer crashed into another locomotive in central Denver early Wednesday morning, spilling the beverage and fuel in a rail yard near Interstate 25 and 38th Ave.

Authorities said no one was hurt in the incident which derailed a few of the rail cars.

Train Derails, Spilling Beer

DENVER -- A Burlington Northern Freight train crashed and derailed in Denver early Wednesday, leaving several tanker cars in a jumble.

The derailment was reported at about 4:30 a.m. in the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe switching yard near Park Avenue and Interstate 25.

There were no reports of injuries, but a BN engine could be seen heavily damaged in the wreckage. Three glass-lined tank cars carrying Coors beer were damaged and beer leaked from at least one of the cars onto the ground. The beer was headed from the Coors plant in Golden to its plant in Virginia.

Denver fire said that asphalt was also spilled from another train car.

According to a Burlington Northern spokesman, a switch engine was moving 34 train cars when they somehow rolled down the track and ran into parked locomotives in the rail yard.

The Denver Fire Department determined there was no fire danger left the cleanup to Burlington Northern. The train yard derailment was not affecting rush hour traffic.

"Denver Fire Department officials took time out of the clean-up effort to stumble over to reporters to slur the following statement:

'We ecthpect to have thins under control mom...mmormon...momentrily....ah fuck it'll be cleaned up soon. WOOHOO!!!!'

He also asked for community volunteers to send much needed provisions like chips, peanuts, and other snack foods.

This is Mike Hunt reporting live at the scene."
