Are some Harleys' lighting illegal?

Just wondering about all those cruisers out there... I stumbled across this document looking for something else, and it got me thinking:

Scroll down to the section on page 8 titled Motorcycle Equipment Requirements, specifically the section on Headlights.

http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ve...nts_8583_7.pdf

"At least one, not more than two..."

What about those guys that have one main headlight and one on each side flanking it? I see a guy every morning it's not raining or snowing that I swear is running 42V aircraft landing lights.

What about the Gold Wings with the fog lights mounted to the front of the fairing down at ground level?

Then there's the guys riding with ape hangers. If I'm reading that correctly, the handlebars can be no more than 15" from the saddle to the highest point of the grip??

We won't even get into the noise levels of a hawg with straight pipes. (let alone how to measure the noise level)

Maybe we could stat a letter-writing campaign to give the Royal Oak cops some ammunition to harass someone else?

:P

Hmmm.... Aren't the running lights yellow and on the end of a stalk with the turn signals in them? I understand that the turn signals and running lights can be amber, white, or anything in between, but the lights a lot of Harleys seem to have are far, far more than running lights. How a 55-watt light could be considered a running light is beyond me. Heck, most cars' headlights are at least 55 watts.

Sorry 'bout the image size... can't seem to re-size it for some reason...

Looks like three headlights to me, and last time I had a math class, three was still more than two. Sounds to me like they're illegal given the letter of the law. I think we need a letter-writing campaign to all the municipalities in southeast MI to complain. :P

Aaaw, shoot, that's why! They must have made that change somewhere around the time Al Gore invented the internet, huh?

Crazy new-math....

Seems like headlights but they are 2 running lights and 1 headlight on that there bike. Running lights same as on car with daytime running lights (DRL), just on a bike gotta have the headlight cuse it's required to be on even if you have the running lights. Excessive lighting it is but hey better to be seen and heard (even if in an annoying way) than the alternative.

I'm guessing that since the two smaller lights have an actual on and off switch they aren't considered a headlight, but fall under being a fog light of some sort. From what I understand fog lights aren't illegal, but it is illegal to use them when there is not fog or conditions that limit visability. I'm not sure about high beams, but I think there is some law regarding when and how they are to be used.

I would think that it's up to the officer to decide if the rider is using his/her lights illegally. Considering the amount of people driving with obvious infractions ( broke head light/tail light..etc ..etc) , I think the police could care less, unless they needed a reason to pull some one over.

there's hope in the words and emotion in the eyes
it's so easy to be misled by the savvy gentle guise
and like fools we trust the delivery
but it's all just drunk sincerity

Believe it or not, sometimes cops are mandated to do things they donít like to do. But have to do these things because of their jobs.

If you donít like it that cops are pulling everyone over and writing all kinds of tickets. You have two choices. 1st choice, make sure you are 100% legal and donít do anything stupid, i.e. rev up your bike, pull out without your chin strap secured, or your visor up without eye protection, etcÖ..
2nd choice, stay out of Royal Oak.

Or you could write the city mayor. See how that goes.
