I can't speak to service providers in your area, but spicerke and I recently changed to Cingular and got new phones. She got the Motorola SLVR L7 and loves it so far. Phone, mp3 player, camera, etc. I got the Samsung SGH D807. The more I learn about it the more I like it. We'll see how the phones fare in a few months/years.
My favorite phone that I've had besides this one (so far) was the i90c's we had with Nextel. If Nextel's customer service were not a festering pile of shit we'd probably still be with them. I heard from many though that Nextel is more interested in businesses, not personal accounts. Their customer service certainly confirmed that for us. We had left sprint to go to Nextel, and now that they are together I hope the whole thing tanks, they'll never see another dime of my money. It's a pity too, as I really liked their phones and never had an issue with dropped calls or coverage.
T-mobile was a joke too, we had them after Nextel. They may be good in really big cities, but their network overall sucks ass. I spent more time on Cingular's network than t-mobiles. Verizon was considered (mostly because them and Cingular were the only two we hadn't tried), but Cingular had the phones we wanted and a little bit better deal to. Plus their coverage looked better for the areas we frequent.
To find the current phones we have I did some research and found cnet's reviews to be helpful. I used them to narrow down the search and once I identified a few I liked I just went to google and specifically looked for what people didn't like about them.
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all of fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomanical, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. - Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion
