Unhappy home computer got virus

my home computer caught a virus... [email protected]

anyone got experience in cleaning this out?

I tried symantec's directions but the registry key they tell me to delete is not in the location they told me it would be and a file search doesn't find anything with the file name either and their website doesnt' offer tools to download that will automatically fix this virus there are several others similar but not the same (guess this one is just too new yet to have one) yes I have norton antivirus but I had not done and update for a few weeks (I'm an idiot) and this one slipped through....

I have to be in safe mode to get stuff to work halfway right... but other than that I can't copy or paste files or get my norton to work cause the virus is preventing it from opening up and I can't get it to update or reinstall to try and do a full system scan to delete the virus file that way... the only way I could find the virus name was to go onto symantecs' website and do a scan from their website while in safe mode and that's where it told me I had 101 files infected with the [email protected] virus....

I just got the virus July 21st or 22nd (can't remember) and it was in an email from someone in my contact list that I know (who never sent me anything and their computer is fine) no subject and not text in the body of email but had an attachment of cat.com then another email dog.com and then another email doll.exe I never opened any of the attachements and it still infected my computer.. and I could not delete the emails either....

Well thanks for posting before you fixed it so we can all catch it from your dirty, filthy, stinking, contaminated computer.

j/k, good luck

This is why I don't use outlook. You don't need to download it. Once it's been downloaded in your e-mail program for you to read, it's already downloaded the file or given it access to your computer. I don't know about the fix, but what virus scan do you have???? McAfee does a great job, and has a good firewall protection too

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

the second one you should be able to put on a disk and install it on your computer without the net...it will run and do its thing.

Been there done that....do yourself a favor: buy a router with a firewall, and install stinger as well as something like Mcafee(sp) or you will be in the boat I was in a while ago...thanks to Lou_Brakant I did not lose anything....

as originally mentioned I have Norton (Professional) - but it had been a few weeks since I had done an update so my Norton didn't have this virus information otherwise Norton has been excellent at keeping my computer virus free....

I may have to give Keith (lube) a call then... cause I have a shit boat of family dig pics that haven't been saved to a CD yet and dont' want to loose them

I'll give that second one a try.. I tried to reload my norton since it got rid of my subscription information and so I redownload it but when I went to click to run the install it wouldn't do it hopefully the stinger thing will have better luck...
