Hwy 550 is 80 miles of motorcycling bliss running through the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado. It runs from Durango to Ridgeway over some of the best terrain in the state. In Durango...the Silverton/Durango narrow guage railroad is a nice break for a day if you've ridden a long way to get there. When you are ready.... head north on 550 to Silverton and Ouray....which is known as the Swiss Alps of Colorado. This road goes over 10-11,000 feet at places like Coal Bank and Red Mountain passes.Ouray has some nice hotels and B&Bs styled in the 1800s' and also has some great natural hot springs to soak sore bodies. You can also rent 4x4s to hit some of the rugged mountain passes in the area.Once you get to Ridgeway....you can head west to Telluride....or head out to Montrose and Gunnison.
