Angeles Crest Highway, So Cal
Off the 210 freeway north of Pasadena at La Canada, up the San Gabriel mountains into the Angeles National Forest. About 50 miles of twisting mountain road at elevations as high as 7,000+ feet gets you to Wrightwood. From there you can go south to the 15 freeway and on to San Bernardino and Riverside, or north to Palmdale and the 14 freeway then back south to the 5 freeway and back to LA. The road is good, bumpy in places, and has lots of tar patches which make corners interesting if not scary in the heat of the day. Watch for fallen rock closer to Wrightwood. Most of the mountain route is a "Special Enforcement Zone" with double traffic fines. Highway patrol does keep a presence here, with radar. Speed limit is 55 most places. Traffic is generally light.
Really a nice ride. Come up from La Canada and ride to Wrightwood for lunch. Turn around and go back the way you came; the road looks totally different and its really the fastest way back to LA!
<on edit> I rode 'the Crest' today, the 4th of July, between 1 and 4 PM. Only saw ~10 bikes total, maybe a few more cars. And 1 cop.
