I suck part 2: VIR

no change in my ability to suck. different bike, different track, same results

i went to the dreaded VIR. i hate the place. but i wanted to race so bad, i figured, why not?

btw, the track is beautiful, the plantation house is beautiful. just a wonderful time.

well my weekend started with two friday practice sessions (we were sharing the track with the grand-am car series). the bike SUCKED. i swapped out my wasted pirelli 120 front for a new brickstone 110 front. it helped, but it steered like a truck still.

first race, GTL. i wasn't sure where i was in the order. i was getting tired and getting lapped. so i kinda gave up. then two bikes passed me. unlike the others, they didn't pull away. those where the two guy who had been behind me in position the whole way.

feeling pissed about my GTL finish, i went out in mwsp. there were 9 bikes entered and only 8 would be allowed to start (sv650's aren't legal for the class). so i get off the line good. bike still sucks. it was moving around a lot and i was tightening up on the bars. it is important to remember. i wound up with 8th (my first sprint top 10, but not a proud moment). the hard part is i felt faster than everyone in the race from 5th down to me. but i couldn't hang with them.

so, i load the bike into the trailer (keep the moisture out of it) and i'm wishing i had my stock springs with me because the bike wasn't turning with the traxxion springs i installed earlier in the month. then something said to check the steering damper. FULL HARD. i like FULL SOFT!!! DUH!!!

i wake up and i'm immediately picking up the pace. i'm getting knee, i feel totally different. lwgp is my first race up. no last place for me. i'm not exactly the man or anything, but i get 17 out of 21. if i got a better start and could figure out 4 and 5, i know i could do better there. only got lapped by experts (who get a hell of a start on us and brian kradget (sp?) is one of them).

next race. lwsb. i was in the strangest battle of the race for about 1/2 lap. there were 4 400's (i think there were only 5 400's in the race) running nose-to-tail. we were all running faster than the lead 400. i was second in line and there were 2 behind me. we start going into 8 and i want to go outside the lead 400. one behind wants to go outside as well and i push him a little wide (luckily for him). the 400 down the inside motors off, the one on the outside (with me) has some drive on me and the lead bike misses a shift and rolls into my line. drive is dead as i try to keep from hitting him. two are gone and one is just sitting dead in front of me. he finds his gear and i eventually pass him...

then i got passed into 1 by an sv on the last lap. i think i was a bit faster, but i couldn't get him back. i figured i could draft past him outta 17 onto the front straight. he was A LOT faster through 17 though.... oh well, it turned out i narrowly beat him the race before. i think i got 17 out of 20. the disappointing part was the 400 that missed a shift i thought i recognized from earlier in the day, he finished 5th in mwsp.... maybe next time...

i also wanna say, i camped out and had a great time all weekend with a WONDERFUL group of people.

sorry to hear that i must have missed your post.

i saw the kid that is riding steve grigg's raptor. it's kinda strange to see a bike like that at a club race. i don't know the kid's name, i talked to his brother a lot, real nice guy. he seemed like a nice guy as well, just quiet.

did he buy steve's deal or is it a sponsorship, or? he looked like he was getting along pretty good for a relative newbie.

Steve sold one of the Raptors and still has one. I would assume it is the guy that bought one unless he let a friend use his. They really are good bikes and Steve was actually asking a reasonable price for them.

did grigg retire perminately from racing? or just from pro-level racing?

He has surprised me... he quit permanently. I didn't think he would be able to do it but he has although he still has a Supersport legal GSXR750 and one Raptor remaining.

He and his wife had a baby the weekend of the AMA VIR race last year so he drastically adjusted his priorities. Oh, and his dad bought a kick-ass BMW car(ie, Daddy having fun with the money now).

I agree with RCjohn. (did I just say that?)

One of the things I have learned about road racing( in my 4 races to date) is that, every time, there will inevitably be some form of catastrophy, either on the track or in the pits. Race profile tires wont fit under your front fender, the P.A. system is so poor that you can't hear 3rd call for your race or practice session, you run out of gas on the track, you crash. It seems you are constatnly in a case of mild panic about something. Yet, once I get on the track, everything becomes serene.

If you had fun, you didn't suck, you just had fun.

And fun is what it's all about
