Back on a bike - Need Recs?

Ok, I'm new here if there is a place I can archive this info from just let me know and we'll stop the thread.

I'm getting back into the motorcycle world after a fifteen year absence. I grew up riding in the deserts of So. Cal. on everything from 3 wheelers to Huskys. I rode a 650 Maxim for a few years and I'm comfortable with riding on the street. I've read some of the advice given to new riders on this forum and I respectfullly don't consider myself a "beginner." I knew when I got rid of the 650 that it would be some time before I was able to get back into the bike world but I swore when I came back I would go big. 1000cc or bigger big. I'm 38 6' 210. I think it's something about the five kids that has got me wanting the freedom of two wheels. I'm lusting after a Blackbird but that's all that it is. I'm uninformed about my choices. Some basic considerations are the FJR, ST, and the Blackbird. I want to stay under 10K so used is probably the way to go. There would be rare occasion when I might get my wife to go with me 5'6" 120.

There's the background so a little advice on choices would help me. I'll be riding in the Hill Country around San Antonio none to aggressively. I won't be the guy doing stoppies or racing. I do enjoy a straightline quick run and the feel of plenty of power underneath. I don't need to be the fastest guy on the block so we needn't consider the 'Busa unless it really fits the profile.

The busa is not a bad tourer really. Its pretty comfy at long distances. Also consider the Z1000, if you are into the naked thing, Honda 919 is in the same category. Personally I'd avoid the FJR, since it looks too much like a goldwing to me...

Just a word of caution to you. Today's 1000's are a quantum leep faster than the 1000's of when you were riding. The 600's of today are probably on par with what was hot back then. I started on an 850 midnight special, similar ergos to the maxim and my 96 1100 im on now is a hell of a lot more bike than what that was. And it's a slug compared to today's bikes. Just dont get in over your head is all I'm saying, keep those 5 kids in mind when you twist the volume control Personally, I would recomend an f4I or a yzf600r for a get used to riding again bike before you make the leap to warp speed.

Maxim probably make an honest 50 rear wheel hp. My 01 FZ1 Dynos 125 hp at the rar wheel stock. An SV 650 makes like 72. A Nighthawk 750 (70 hp) or Bonneville 865? (55 hp) with a set of springs and shocks for two up would ease you in a lot better. An FZ1 or FJR can readily, two up on a blitz pass, can hit 130-140 with no indication of stress or strain.

As has been said, bike hp has increased exponentially since you last rode. I think you'll be pleasantly surprsed.

Just picked-up a '95 ZZR-1100 (ZX-11 to you guys) myself and am even more in love with it than I could imagine. 150hp on tap, but it just rolls on so effortlessly. Wanna go slow? Fine, go slow. Wanna go warp speed? Okay, let's go.

I went big because I wanted to be able to tour at some stage, probably with Mrs Tree on back and perhaps with a trailer. This girl will make all that, and more, possible.
