First Post - Considering Sports Tourer

I'm a recent returnee to biking, and spent the last two years re-learning my skills on a '90 Honda Hawk 650 GT. It was a great place to (re-)start - reliable, low center of gravity, extremely responsive, huge tires (and traction), and ergonomics that aren't too aggressive for a sports-bike, that is. if I were to stay in pure sports-bikes, I'd be happy with the Hawk. I find that I want more of a Sports-Tourer, though, and in doing my research for the right bike, I just found this list.

I found some really valuable facts and opinions here. It's the kind of thing the magazines should give us, but seldom do. Based on the comments I've read here, my starting points are (in order) the Honda VFR and the Triumph Sprint ST (I live about a mile from a Triumph dealership). Either one would seem to fit my needs and each has enough aftermarket to allow me to raise the bars and put on a slightly higher windscreen.

I've tried on both bikes in the stores and have test rides planned ("No test ride, no purchase" - Jaywalker, July 2000). I have a short inseam, but both seem to be okay initially. I suppose lower seats aren't out the question.

Anyway, thanks for the good data so far. I'm looking forward to the evaluation process.

I am considering semi-retiring my 78 GS1000 to local use, and classic show off. I too have been looking at sport touring options and am darn close to ordering a Suzuki V-Strom. A couple of months ago Cycle World magazine had a sport bike shoot out and this dual purpose bike tied for first place. Great ergonomics, endurance, carrying capacity and manoevrability. The price is the best deal in its class. Although it is a new design the engine/drive train is detuned from the TLR which has been around for a while. Another nice thing is that you can get a centre stand for it.

By the way, like the Hawk it is a V Twin but 1000 cc

Take a look.

Thanks, Sailor. I've checked it out and the bike's specs look good, except for the seat height. As an "Inseam Challenged American" I need a lower seat height.
