the incrediblly shrinking knee pad... (football)

Odd football observation / question..

So over the weekend I was watching football on TV. It seems like players are wearing less lower body pads than ever before. I know the NFL has really strict uniform regulations (i.e. only allowed to show stuff with addidas logo on it, 5k fines for a sock falling down, etc), so this seemed kinda odd. Are they laxing on protective stuff? I played for a short while in school. Knee, thigh, hip, tail and cup were required (latter hardly enforced)…given the nature of the uniform, it’s pretty apparent what someone is / is not wearing for protective stuff. In the big-10 and NFL, Tailbone / hip pads seems to almost non-existent. Thigh and knee pads seem to be getting smaller and smaller (granted it’s speed-game and little extra weight / maximum mobility is desired)…does anyone know if the rules are getting laxed, or are people just risking it? What requirements did you have when you played, how enforced was it, and did people blow the requirements off?

I played at WVU and a short time at University of Kentucky all the pads you mentioned were required. However, most WR, CB, QB's and other speciality positions routinely cut the stck pads down untill they were almost nothing. Knee pads were always a pain in the ass so i cant blame them, the pads never bent with the knee and felt weird.

As for needing them, I couldnt imagine going without because i played the line, but i don't see why corners and safteys need them. Not enough hits to the legs

I dont know if the rules say that the stock ones have to be a certain size or not. I just know that almost everyone took scissors to the pads to make them smaller.

I can't imagine a ref caring too much about it. Stick em on the gloves is used all the time, but i havent read about anyone being called out for that. Probably alot a rules on the books that are not enforced. Like my understanding is that is is still legal to punt the ball through the uprights and score, but I don' t think anyone has done that since the 30's.

I don't know any Refs in this forum?
