oil changing

how does oil changing on a bike work, i though i would just use like synthec motor oil or something like that, but then i heard form a friend of mine that has a gixxer 750 that u have to buy "special motrcyle oil" at 8 bucks a quart, 4 quarts, and 25 for the filter and that ends up being like 80 dolllars for a oil change, is this true or could i use regular motor oil?

oil change

Is this a new bike? The manufacturer recommends a specific break-in procedure for new bikes.

I have an SV, and what I did was use "real" oil for the first break in period, and then synthetic since then. Reason behind synthetic was b/c the SV has a v-twin, not sure if that is the best for the Gixxer powerplant.

They recommend (for the SV) a change relatively infrequently (as compared to a car) and a filter change every other oil change. If you had it done, it might run you a few bucks, but if you do it yourself you'll save some money and learn more about your ride.

Check your manual, and if that isn't clear, ask your dealer.

Hope that helps!

There are a number of threads here dealing with oil questions, you might try searching for them.

In short though, how it works is basically the same as it does with a car. You don't want to use synthetic to start with though. I've heard people recommending switching after a few thousand miles at the earliest. I'm far from an expert, but something about the synthetic oil doesn't allow the engine to break in properly.

As far as everything else just do a search and you'll get a lot more detailed information than I can give.
