What is this on my bike?

I've stripped down my bike to paint all the plastics and the tank. I found this metal object on the left side in the back. What is it? Lo-Jack?

It is

Your voltage regulator, it stops the battery from being charged at more than 14-16 volts, if this little object burns out it can ruin your whole ride It absorbs the extra output from the alternator.

I've blown a couple... a real headache when your far from home, These are a weak point on the eairler Blackbirds, the birds alternator pumps out quite a bit at speed, and you don't notice until your battery cooks off..

Make sure you don't paint it. That will make it much harder for it to discipate the heat it generates. Plus those things are NOT cheap.
