Question

Have you checked your voltage?

I blew my headlight when my regulator went kaput. If it is faulty the voltage can climb way above 12-13 volts to as high as 17-20 this can blow bulbs. (also your battery & important electrical systems)

Put a multimeter across the battery when the bike is running, then rev to see if the voltage spikes.

If it is, you've caught it early.

I was stuck 150kms from home and had to wait for the missus to hire a trailer and get out to me...

It may be somthing else, but it's worth checking.

definetely worth checking. VFR's have a problem with smoking Regulator/Rectifiers for some reason. I think that they're narrowed it down to one of the rear spark plug wires inducing voltage into the rectifier. You can read about it for hours on the VFR mailing list.

I haven't heard of any problems with the 2000's as of yet.
