Octane ?

I just bought a 05 F4i and love it. Its the 1st high performance sport bike I've owned. I also have a ST1300 and used to have a ZRX1200. Anyway I always use whatever octane the book (engineers) suggest. They suggest at least 86 octane. Is this just because the engine doesn't get hot??? Even the ST1300 says minimum 91. What do you think/use?

Thanks

There was another thread on this topic. I liked what one of the moderators here said. He said he used the lowest octane for the lower price and he found his bike ran fine. I would think that would be around 87 up in these parts. Not sure about elsewhere. Depends mainly on the compression ratio of motor.

I have a modified motor on my ZR1100 with 11.5:1 ratio, and I can still run premium pump gas in it (though it runs a bit better on 100 octane aviation fuel).

Seems to be an almost weekly question & best go by you Owners Manual. I have tried all types & octane fuels & judge them upon my feeling of power, fuel consumption, cooling of the engine, etc.

Yet in my 58 yrs of riding I have always gone back to using 87 octane for the duration of my time when riding said m/cs.

If you question what I ride, & experienc, then simply look to the left side & see that I have 3 sportbikes in my garage & in those yrs of riding above just remember I did 42 yrs of tough dirt comp which also includes 5 yrs of road racing. Besides I am an an ex-m/c mechanic ex-part-owner of two m/c shop & managed two m/c shops.

I do a LOT of hwy riding in these Cdn Rockie Mtns & YES I see the chaps with new Harleys & Cruisers lining up to fill up with the higest octane BECAUSE they are inexperinced in this world of m/cing yet I will be filling up one of my sportbikes with 87 octane.

Remember all the others on the road are crazy & out to kill you.
