Can anyone offer me some good advise on my 98 zx9r
my 4th gear comes out when I let off the throttle.
And now 3rd is starting to act up too.The bike has
about 28k.Is this something i can fix myself Im good
with tools.Is this common?

Talking Tranny problems.

Angelo,
the problem you are having is most likely due to the circlips on the shifter rails, on the 98 and some 99 models Kawasaki found that the circlips were not thick enough and distorted opening clearances on the gears causing the problem you discribe.

I would say either your bike missed the warranty recall or its from wear & tear, have you had the bike from new? if so check if the work had been done under warranty to remedy the problem.

I found all this out when I complained about my 00 9R slipping out of 4th.

Im just teasin bro! I found it odd that a 98 has tranny probs ??? Is there a recall out for that ??

Angelo, Tranny repairs generally require removing the engine from the bike, turning it upside down, and splitting the cases. Not as simple as changing the spark plugs, but doable by a competent home mechanic. I've replaced transmission parts before on a KZ900. My best advice is to get a factory service manual, if you don't already have one, and also get a Clymers manual. The pictures & step-by-step detail in the Clymers manual is a little bit easier to understand than the factory book. Review the procedure, and then make your decision. Being a good mechanic, you may also opt to remove the engine and take just the engine to a dealer. This will save you several hundred dollars in labor charges, and ensure that the job is done right.
