Question Bad mileage?

Hey,

This being my first bike and all, I don't really know what sort of mileage I should get out of a tank of petrol.

My bike is an old Ninja 400R... about a '90 or so. I have a 18 litre (4.8 gallon) tank and I'm getting about 180km (115 miles) out of it. The bike redlines at about 12.5g's, but I rarely take it above 8g's.

That's about 25mpg!! That seems awfully bad for a 400cc bike, when my 1.8 litre BMW gets about the same!!!

So, what could be causing such bad mileage, and what can I do about it? There's never been petrol on the ground around the bike, so I don't think it's a leak.

Thanks for the help, it's greatly appreciated!

Chris

It ought to get better than that. First thing I would check is the air cleaner element. Wash and oil it and if that doesn't do it it is probably carb clean time. While you are doing that you can check to see of the main jets are the stock size.

hhmmm... OK, thanks! I think I'll get a quote on how much its gonna cost to get the carbs cleaned and try and take it in tomorrow.

Shot for the info!

another question...

Legend, thanks for the input... it gives me something to compare my mileage to.

Things aren't as bad as I initially thought... What happened was I ran outta juice, switched to reserve and filled up about 300m down the road. I was just thinking about it now, it only took 12 litres to fill the tank! Now, if it's supposed to be a 18 litre tank, with 1 litre reserve which I had to use, shouldn't it take 18 litres to fill the tank again? hhmmm... there was definitely no space for another 6 litres after I filled up.

Any ideas on this?

thanks!
