Exclamation Wheelie Rookie!

Yo Stunters,

Got any advice on how to teach myself to wheelie? I've been riding a while and have done a few "accidental" wheelies but that's it. What can you tell me about how to do em? I had said before that I would never do that type of stuff, but the urge is killin me! Help a rider out fellas! I ride a 2002 CBR600-F41 if it's any help.

crusie along in first at around 7-9 grand, sit back in the seat, then snap it hard it'll will come up. less gas in the tank is better too.

I reccomend standing on your pegs, lean back a little and give it some gas. Doing it this way will allow for a smoother wheelie in 2nd gear. It will also be softer on the bike, your neck, and your gentle area .

i agree with VYPIR, but it sounds like he is recommending a stand-up to start with. for a beginner that may be kind of hairy. since i don't know what mods are done to your bike (sprockets, exhaust, etc.), play around and find out what's the easiest rev range to pop it up in first. usually about 4-6 grand should do it. if that doesn't help, try leaning back when you snatch the throttle in that rev range. believe me, you'll know! when you find the right rev range, what you will do is go in first until you hit that rev range, lay off the gas for a split second and then snatch the throttle again while lifting up. it will scare the crap out of you at first because you don't know where the balance point is. don't go for big wheelies at first as you'll flip it and your summer of riding will be over. look past your fears and do it.....it's the only way. once you find the balance point, start riding the wheelies further (distance) until you can max out first. then you will learn to switch gears during wheelies, stand-ups, flamingos, etc. good luck!

Your right, I thought about what I was reccomending for a rookie, and decided that was probably too much.

I do feel that doing them in first gear should be taken with great caution. The 1st gear has alot of torque. No ass draggin desired!

Stick with OLDA1R1's advice, this is how I learned to do wheelies, It is a good starting point for the uninitiated and by far the safest and least expensive means of learning. After you get the feel for how the bike behaves when it is on one wheel you will be able to refine your technique and try more adventurous wheelies like standups, no footers, etc... Good luck

First rule to anything "DON'T MAKE IT MORE DAMN DIFFICULT THAN IT HAS TO BE". 50% of picking up wheelies is body position and weight distrubution. Heres some myths and facts.

1.Less fuel is good..... nope. that lack of weight gives the bike less force to throw back.
2.Lean back in the seat...... nada. that makes your weight counter aganst the bikes weight.
3.First gear is to much........ negative. first gear is great for learning how to bring it up smooth.
1.Sit around the middle of the seat... this keeps your weight even.
2.Don't lock your elbows...... this allows the bike to throw its weight back without being blocked.
3.*ALWAYS COVER YOUR REAR BRAKE*....I don't care what anyone tells you, that brake can save your ass in a pinch. just ask thew from tenninety6.

The list goes on but I don't have enough room here. Practice your first gear lifts, once you get them smooth and controled then try second gear. Learn to ride decent sit downs then go to shifting and then riding standups. You'll see that you can lift standup wheelies higher and see where your going better. Remember on smaller bikes (600's) rider technique is much more effective than just trying to muscle it up. Bounce the forks with the throttle..... Chop it off then whack it back on when the suspention rebounds its self. Always wear a helmet and least a jacket and gloves. Keep practicing and don't act like a squid about it. Use your head, and you'll be fine. Just keep in mind no wheelie is worth a totaled bike or a totaled rider.
