Wide Tire Conversions and Single Sided Swings

I recently picked up a magazine that covered a 2k5 Suzuki gsx-r1000 that had been customized cosmetically to the extreme. The most noticable feature was a huge rear tire(330mm) single sided swingarm conversion. I haven't been able to find much information on wide tires or single sided swingarm conversions from any real good sources. I would really just like to know if there are any advantages to these setups on a sportbike. I thought the conversion I saw looked cool as hell, but I also know that sometimes form needs to follow function for something to work as it should. I am not considering doing something like this in the near future but I would like to know some more about just for my own benefit.

Any info is greatly appreciated

P.S. I am also considering a first bike for myself. I have been seriously looking at a Suzuki SV650S. Any opinions or other suggestions??
