Bottom fairing?

Is the bottom fairing on a bike necessary and serve some kind of purpose aside from looks? I was thinking about taking mine off because I like the look of not having it, plus I dont want to have to repaint it.

Thanks,
Sepias

i know on my 6r, the lower fairing (peice that ius basically the underbelly) seems to hold the bottom of my upper fairings, if i didn;t have it they would flap in the wind from only being connected at the extreme top.

I've ridden without it, and they dont flap since there are bolts about 1 inch above were the lover fairing would attach so I'm not worried about that. Thanks though.
