Fender eliminator difficulty on a 1997 ZX-6R

I just got a 1997 Kawi ZX-6R and I want to eliminate the rear fender. I got the aftermarket rear turns and I made a bracket just like i did for my old F2 which I elinimated myself. But when I went to hack the fender off I realized that the part that the plate normally goes on isnt flush with the tail of the bike instead there is a few inches of plastic that overhang and make up the very large trunk area. So if i cut along the underside of the fender there is still a bunch of plastic under the tail. Any suggestions on how to shrink the size of the trunk and make the plate go up against the tail of the bike without making me spend almost $300 on an undertail? Has anyone eliminited on a 97 ZX-6r before? Taran.

p.s. here is a pic of the bike. isnt she a bute?

I have a 97 zx-9, i think the tails are the same on our bikes..... I originally got a fender eliminator kit, wasted $$ on that, then realized that I wanted an undertail, which is the only way to go.... the undertail was $60 more than the fender eliminator... the only thing with the undertail, you will lose your trunk completely, I have to make a custon one this winter. I got my undertail from texas fairing... they are the only ones who make them, I think... if i were you, i would try to return the fender elim. and just do it the right way.... Dave

The undertail is probably the way to go as long as you can custom some underseat storage. I opted to do my own custom fender delete because I am spending big money on installing/upgrading heat and a/c in my house. I cut off any fender that hung below the fairings. I left one tab on each side just big enough to mount a short stalk signal, and two tabs on the back just big enough for one screw each for the reg plate. I haven't had time to take pics yet.

Just to clarify guys - i didnt buy an eliminator. Why spend over $100 when you can make it out of scrap sheet metal. I made one for my 250 ninja and made one for the zx-6R, but yea the storage compartment riddled me. I am leaning towards bust buying an undertail and then just attaching the bracket I origionally made for the eliminator to the underside of the undertail. I dont want to integrate because I got these really sweet iridium turn signals i want to use. My buddy has this stuff that can coat sheetmetal to give it a metallic plactic coating. So I'll just coat the bracket in a red metallic coating to match the undertail. But I don't want to buy a damn rear hugger cause thats an extra $150 there. But i guess it looks sweet if you do that. One more question....I've seen the small canister thats attached to the rear pegs removed.....1. what does that do and 2. how and where do to relocate it to?? Any suggestions? Thanks TARAN

Well if you would look at it you would see this: 98-02 models and I have a 1997. I found one though at www.parts411.com I found a cheap rear hugger there too. This is the ONLY site I have ever seen that carries shit for 1997. Taran

I took my nitrogen cannister and just shoved under the seat with a zip tie, texas fairing has undertails, and they can come painted. I didnt want to spend all the $$ on an undertail AND hugger, but it looks so damn good, i put the plate and light right in back of the rear tire, which is illegal, just like the rest of the bike, and i also raised the shock WAY up, the bike looks a lot newer now....will look even better after i paint it this winter.... I will try to post a pic tonight....anyone else have pics??? Im trying to find stock pics of a 97 9R, to compare with what im going to do to it over this winter..... Dave

Nitrogen canister huh? Cool ill have to move it. I Really want the back of the bike to look clean. I might just have to get an undertail and hugger, I have to wait and see how much money i can stash away. I dont like the remainders of plastic after cutting the stock fender off. Oh yea by the way I just got an insurrance quote. Since I am only 19 and only have 3 years expierence the ZX-6R will cost me around $800 a year and in minnesota we only ride 4 months. Thats so damn expensive.....those bastards only discounted me the 3 "storage" months even though its realy 8!!! What a rip. Anyways thanks for the tips guys!! TARAN
