contemplating purchase of 95 916 duc mono


Need help. Contemplating purchasing a '95 Duc 916. never ridden or owned a Duc or v-twin. Just looked at bike. Cosmetically, it was in poor to bad shape. Chips here and there on fairings, but no major cracks. Bike looked dirty overall and definately either needs new fairings or a new paint job! Scuff marks everywhere. Looks like the owners didn't really care how it looked. Hhhmmmm. Clear casing on instrument panels cracked, etc. (He indicated that it was typical and had plagued these bikes.) Side stand was removed and indicated that it needed to be bored out for reattachment. Bike would not start with starter switch. He had to remove right panel and mess with relay manually. He said that it had gone bad and needs replacing. Only the left headlight came on. He said the right side is the high beam. Correct? He's not sure what the problem is with the righside not coming on. Bulb, or bigger problem. He said that I could have the exterior resurfaced and painted to like original specs. Is this possible? Thereby save me money from buying new fairing parts, etc. Are there shops that came make the bike look like the original cosmetically? And how much would this cost? I cranked the engine. Having never ridden a Duc, it sounded pretty loud! Is this normal? I read/heard about these Ducs having had problems with it's axel and wheel falling out, thereby recalls. He indicated that it was due to the ball bearings prematurely wearing out, etc. but that this had been taken care of with both axels. Should I be majorly concerned? Should I run the other way. KBB indicates a reconditioned bike in excellent condition for around $6000. What should this bike go for after my description? Of course, I plan on having this bike evaluated by a professional before making any serious decisions, etc. I've ridden only rice rockets, etc. Honda CBRs and a ZX7R. What should I expect. I heard these Ducs aren't exactly a commuter bike. Thanks in advance.

Run away! Sounds like he beat the crap outta it. Too many wheelies is why instruments are cracked. Prolly coolant tank is next. There are two types of Ducati owners. Those that take care of the bike and those that will just flogg them to death. Sounds like this guy is the latter.

A few ccs short of a full litre.

Exotic restoration

This would be like buying a clapped-out Ferrari.- A total money pit!

By the time you got this thing in decent shape, you could've probably already purchased a much cleaner example somewhere else without all of the headache.
