Thumbs up 520 conversion for 996

I did the conversion a couple days ago, and I'm really happy so far. I weighed the new stuff vs. the old stuff so I could see how much weight I saved.

The stock setup is DID 525 chain, 15/36 gearing. I went with the AFAM lightweight 15 tooth front (has holes to save weight), DID ERV2 gold x-ring 520 chain and AFAM quick change rear setup with 40 tooth sprocket.

The acceleration is much more brisk, with about 600rpm difference at highway speeds. It gets to 110 much much quicker, but I haven't ridden anything but highway miles, so no real riding impressions yet.

Stock DID 525 chain: 1.81kg / 3# 15.75oz
New DID 520 ERV2 gold chain: 1.52kg / 3# 5.75oz
Result: 520 chain is 29g / 10oz lighter

Stock 15 tooth 525 front sprocket: 260g / 9.25oz
New AFAM lightwt 15 tooth 520 front sprocket: 215g / 7.5oz
Result: new sprocket is 45g / 1.75oz lighter

Stock 36 tooth 525 rear sprocket: 975g / 2# 2.5oz
New AFAM quick change 520 rear, 40 tooth: 650g / 1# 6.75oz
Result: new rear setup is 325g / 11.75oz lighter

Stock weight: 3.045kg /6# 11.5oz
New weight: 2.385kg / 5# 4oz

weight savings: 660g / 1# 7.5oz

Is it wrong that I clean my chain and sprocket after every ride? I use a Motul chain lube, giving it a little squirt at every X-ring, then spinning it briefly and finally cleaning the excess and sprocket. I've been known to use Q-tips and a toothbrush too.

Not wrong....just not necessary. But since it makes you happy...what the hell...go for it! Just don't forget that a really clean bike is indicative of deeper emotional problem....

No, it's not wrong to clean your chain and sprocket after every ride. It just means you have way too much dam time on your hands. Please use that time to help the homeless, take a small child to the park or just use that time to download more porn.
