Tank damage and costs

Anyone ever dented their fuel tank?

It was awhile back when we had the tank off the bike(long story) and my step-father had it slip from his hands and it his the ground at a gas station. The top on either side of the tank opening before it curves down is scratched and rusted a bit where the scratches are and toward the front of the tank is a slight dent(not too deep) that has paint scratched off with a bit of rust as well.

I was wondering if anyone had work done to a tank before and an idea of how much this would cost. I'm tired of looking at it and answering people when they're like, "What did you do?"

Not too hard. Honestly, if you want professional paint back to stock, just buy a new tank, it'll be easier and cheaper. For a pro to do it, it would probably cost 200-500 to fix it up and repaint.

You can do it yourself but you'll need the exact paint code to match the rest of the bike. Materials should cost about 40-100 bucks depending on what you have already.

Looked up some OEM prices for a new tank and it's at about $350 for a brand new one. I saw one on ebay for $199 but the guy selling it is selling it because of a large dent on the right side so no-go there.

How hard is it to actually repaint the tank? I have no idea how I would even go about pulling the dent out and painting the damn thing.

Can you post some photos? You might try one of those dent pullers from an auto parts store, then get touch-up paint from Kawasaki to cover the scratches, depending on how bad they are. You should also try a few local body shops. A lot of places will cut you a break for being in the military. They could remove the dent and you could do the touch-up yourself to save some money.

I guess you've figured out that you don't have to remove the tank and take it to the gas station to refill it?

Smarta$$ I knew there'd be one. The real cause of why the tank was off to make a long story short was because it was leaking fuel heavily on my way back home from visiting my lady at work. I took it off to drain the gas stabilizer quicker when I got home, prior to seeing her, from being gone for almost a year and when I put the tank back on it, the pressure seal at the bottom of the tank didn't seal completely like it should.

I'm going to check some local body shops around here I suppose and see what they say about it. I really don't want to do it myself because I have 0 experience painting. But I guess if there's no way around it, I can always use it as a learning experience. haha

maybe a Second Look tank bra ? looks like original but covers the whole tank...and that check is in the mail

Well he can't just do a quick touch-up job since the scratches are deep and already showing signs of rust. Even then, if they are that deep to begin with, no way in hell will you do a simple touch-up that'll lay flush with the surrounding surface. If you lay down paint on it now, the rust is still under it and the paint will not stick on the tank; it'll end up just eating the paint and it continue to chip away, probably making the situation even worse.
