I got a 97 ZX-6R and I looked in a magazine to find out my headlight is an H4. Is this correct/standard? If so can I buy automobile H4 bulbs or does it have to be a motorcycle bulb? I've heard that headlights can melt wiring and other things inside the lens. If the powers consumption is the same (60/55), does it really matter?

If the bulb is an H4, then getting another H4 to replace it should be just fine. An H4 is an H4 weather it's in a car or a bike. The casing is probably made out of metal or some really durable plastic, so as long as you stay within the 60/55 wattage range, nothing will melt.
