eliminating rear signals

hey, i ordered something to turn my brake lights into turns signals as i broke one of the stock ones and just took them both off. i got something they use for hooking up your lights to a trailer. it seemed like it would work but when i installed the only thing that would work were the tail lights (as they did not need any tampering with). I asked around and it seems that there is something to do with feedback or something and they said that whay i had wouldnt work and i had to get some things that wont let the current flow backwards (forget what they called them) but they cost an additional $30. has any1 done this with their CBR f4i?

The things that block the current from flowing backwards are called diodes. can you attach a diagram of what you did?
