Two quick questions... please read!!

i just had a few quick questions out there for anybody who may have any input. i'm considering buying a bike, and it would be my first sportbike. i rode dirtbikes and whatnot a lot when i was younger, so i'm comfortable on two wheels, but my question had to do with my physical size and the bikes i was looking at. i'm really interested in a yamaha R6 or R1, or possibly a honda CBR600RR or 1000RR... i'm also 6'4" 190. do you think i'd be able to comfortably ride any of those bikes? also, which one would you suggest? i'm only asking as opposed to just test riding because i've been EXTREMELY busy the last few weeks and really don't think i'd have time to get out and test ride right now. and one final question, i'll just list off my stats and if anybody could give me an extremely rough estimate on what i'd be looking at for insurance, that would be great. 19, male, student, no tickets, no accidents, and i live in NC if that makes any difference. also if there's any other random advice you'd like to give, i like to learn from other peoples experiences, so feel free to share! thanks a lot fellas.

I dont know if you are going to listen, but you are getting in over you head with a liter bike. The power output of those bikes is absolutely thru the roof. They hit 100mph in first gear. Its an easy way to get yourself into more trouble then you can climb out of.
Also NC is notorious for high insurance, and a liter bike will not help any at all.

From your words being "--i rode dirtbikes and whatnot a lot when i was younger---" does that mean puttered around in the dirt or honest to gosh dirt competition AND what does "--i was younger-" mean in yrs along with your present age? True sort of more then one question as we like to know a bit more about the rider & his experience---especially the lack of time since last riding.

At one time we use to say the changes in the bikes of 10 yrs ago to now has been dramatic though now it is closer to being five yrs ago to now. So you could be at a dramatic step in time. Besides as one that put in 42 yrs of dirt comp, but also street riding & the making of cafe racers, even to the Jpn line of bikes plus 5 yrs of road racing experience the step to sportbikes was so gradual.

Like Vash says when you start to talk about 600cc & Liter bikes you are talking about a big change. Fact is the step from a dirt bike to a street iron, not a sportbike, is still so different. You do realize from some 30 odd hp with low gearing to 100 to 160hp is like a step from a single engine training aircraft to a fighter jet.

Lastly riding dirt is one thing & riding pavement with a sportbike is SO DIFFERENT in how one handles the bike, the braking & just so much more. TRUE your past experience, limited or with a lot of experience, is going to be a big hand in riding on the pavement even if the bike is a regular riding position or closer to a sportbike like a Suzuki SV-650. though talking about 1000cc sportbikes is far, far from 1300cc Cruiser.

Buy an old crappy machine like me! You will drop it, so being old and crappy wont make a differance, plus the fact that if you paid next to nothing on it, you can just carry libality insurance which will probably run hundereds, if not thousands (literaly) less than full coverage insurance.

thanks for the responses guys. as far as my experience riding goes, i've spent a LOT of time in the dirt, lol. not too awful much in competition, but for years almost everyday riding. as far as how long ago, the last time i on anything two wheeled consistently for a long period of time was when i was 16. since then i had kind of moved more towards cars, built a 468ci '67 chevy SB pickup, then a 383ci LT1 firebird... and i drove the firebird my senior year of highschool w/ no wrecks and no tickets, so i am a responsible guy, but i DEFINITELY understand about getting in over your head in terms of power/speed. the only reason why i don't really want a beater bike is because i kind of wanted to get something i wouldn't outgrow quickly. if yall say a 600 is going to be a better idea, i will definitely heed your advice. what about my size? i'm kind of a big guy, will i fit on an R6??

Go sit on them. I know a few people over 6 foot that ride 600s fine.
Even with 600's be carefull. Today they are putting out more power than the liters of late 90's.
Sportbikes will lull you into thinking controlling them is simple. Most of the time it is, everything is smooth and nice. But they react frighteningly fast to any imput, and that includes the wrong ones. Todays 600's will headshake off the throttle, that used to be a liter thing.

As for outgrowing a bike, dont worry about it. If you get an '00 I guarantee you will not be riding it to its limits in 5 years.

I'm 6'3 295 (played college ball) and i currently ride a gixxer 750 and its not a bear in the comfort department. As long as your legs fit in the groove you'll be ok.

As for outgrowing the bike. My first bike was a 96' 900RR and as long as I had fear and common sense it kept me alive. Figure 130hp (after jetting and exhaust) with a 405 dry weight. I could never imagine of outgrowing that thing, full open, when i hit the powerband it scared the hell out of me.

The gixxer 750 is lighter with about 15 more horses. I just got through the first 500 miles and even though i keep it under 10,500 rpms because im still in the break in period. It gets hard to keep the front end down sometimes. In some ways it makes me miss the RR. In fact the 600's today make more then the stock 115hp of my old bike. Which I am sure with a powercommander you could get to 130hp and those bikes are 50lbs lighter then my old stead.

Start with the 600 I think you will be more then happy with it
