RPMs

I like to get the most out of my bike most of the time. My questions is, is it hard on a sportbike to run it around town at 8K or higher RPMs to keep the power at your wrist?

Not really. It will add a bit more wear, but these motors are meant to run strong for a long time.

Your only significant effect will probably be mpgs.

why don't you just downshift and crack on it when you need the power?

The harder you run it the harder the engine is working and wearing. Pretty simple. They are built to run at high rpms for a long time.

Just ride it the way you want to. You paid for it.

Yes keep it at 8000

These bikes are tested at or near red-line for days during development. Nothing you can do at 8000 or 10000 will do any harm. They are designed for that. We barely scratch the capabilities. Keep good oil in the engine and regular maintenance and scheduled checkups.

Not exactly...
Some time ago, Triumph was out to copy one of the jap4 engines. So they put all 4 on the dyno and ran them near redline, untill peak power dropped below 90%.
The winner btw was kawasaki... but thats not the point.
The looser, the R6 dropped in 55hrs. I believe the winner was about 3 times that.
While 150 hours is indeed days, it wont take that long to accumulate if you are constantly keeping it at 8+krpm. Learn to shift.
