Used bike resources

I got a buddy who finally managed to get permission to get his first bike. He's on a budget, so used is a must. I'm trying to help him pick something, and he keeps drifting towards the $2k 1980's bikes. I'm trying to steer him towards something more modern, if for not other reason than reliability ("but the add says its in good shape").

What are some good places to look.. I'd love to find a $3k SV....

Welp, I've heard craigslist.com is pretty good, then maybe your local equivalent of our wantadvertiser.com, then maybe some local bike salvage shops? The guy that runs one near me usually has 2 or 3 bikes for sale he's managed to rebuild... Local dealers sometimes know who's out there selling what from their customer base, a call to them certainly can't hurt...

How soon does he want to get that bike? I might have my Bandit up for sale within the next month, pending successful purchase of a 2001 SV650S, and if my wife decides she is not ready to trade the Savage for my Bandit yet. I'll keep you posted...

If you don't mind buying off ebay there is a world of opportunity for that price. Just be careful of the scammers.

I'm presuming you already looked in my pic gallery to see what the bike looks like. Let me know if you want close-ups of the "mods"

what CC? FZR can also be had, but at much cheaper price that CBRs. Also, there are SVs around for $3k, low miles, only if he can stretch his budget.

did you check out cycletraders.com??

Of course there are Ninja 500/GS500, Katana 600 can be had for cheap.

I'll see what I can do.

Have you guys thought about how you would go about picking up the bike? It would be quite a drive up to Kansas from your neck of the woods. The bike I'm buying in Colorado, I already figured that taking a weekend trip up there with my wife and kids would cost about as much in gas ($200) as a one way plane ticket to Denver! Crating and shipping the bike costs a pretty penny, too.

Just something to keep in mind as you are looking for bikes away from your area...
