I am considering picking up a Honda CBR 600 in Los Angeles and riding it to Phoenix, AZ (approx. 450 miles). I wanted to know if this is a good/bad idea and what to expect from such a tip. Has anyone here done it before? Am I approaching the final frontier of sportbiking?

Thanks guys/gals.

Thumbs up

To date the longest single day trip has been 500 miles on my RR. I felt pretty good and probably could have ridden even longer.

My only hesitation would be making a long trip on a bike that was completely new to me. Is it new? If it's used, do you know the mechanical history? In either case, I would definitely look over the bike thoroughly before I attempted the ride. Tire pressure, fluid levels, chain condition etc.

Good Luck and let us know what you decide.

I just completed a 910 mile one day run from Gallup, N.M. to San Antonio, TX. 15 hours and I was taking it easy, too. The Katana did pretty good until I picked up some bad gas and it took about 4 tankfuls to get rid of the problem. That's the only problem when you ride thru small towns and there is only 1 gas station to choose from. A 600cc bike is more than capable of a solo journey. You will do 450 miles, easily. I do 300 every other Sunday morning

Cool

In 94 I rode a CBR 1000 from Los Angeles to Pensacola Florida in 2 days. I loved it. I would do it in a heart beat again If I got the chance.

450 miles in torrential rain, thunder and lightning. Kept having to pull over as the car I was following was having thermostat problems.

We'd outrun the storm, stop to let the car cool down, the storm would pass over us, we'd get back on the road, catch up to the storm, outrun the storm, stop to let the car cool down, the storm would pass over us, we'd get back on the road, catch up to the storm, outrun the storm, stop to let the car cool down, the storm would pass over us ...

This lasted all 450 miles. Was on a Katana 1100 doing 80 mph with an inch of water to keep up with the car I was following.

The only thing that didn't get wet was the inside of my mouth. It was bone dry from the stress of trying to stay on the bike!!! :-)

The daft thing is, I actually enjoyed myself. Go figure.

Long answer to a short question.

Thanks guys for all your help. The trip is definitely do-able, so I will do it. I think I will enjoy it myself, provided I don't run out of gas (desert hazzard).

It's my girlfriends bike, so I know it is in good shape. She's lending it to me for bit because she doesn't have the time to ride right now. I'll pick up another one for myself this winter.

Thanks again.
