Question

Hello everyone, I need to take my bike in for its first service and I have a few questions. I have a 98 ZX6R. I want to know how much to pay and what really needs to be done. I know the dealer will try to screw me because thats their job. For example a dealer next to where I live told me it would cost about $220 + parts. He said it would be oil change, check all fluids, adjust valves and something else. I used to service cars so I know all the little ways to charge people like "check fluids" Anyway I need some advice please. Thanks in Advance

ROCKY01, dude how many miles do you have, did you buy it new or what? Usually you don't do a valve job until about 8000 miles (at least on Hondas you don't). If it is a true first time maintenance you should only have about 600 miles and at that point the dealer would do an oil change and check your fluids unless they see a prolbem. You should pay around $150.00 unless you have been ragging the hell out of the bike. Go elsewhere and get an estimate.

If I am not mistaken, the first major service on a Kawasaki is 600 miles, then not until 6,000. The 600 is an oil change, tune up and valve adjustment if needed. The 6,000 is the same, though valve adjustment is mandatory at that point.

If I were you I would just follow whatever is in the owners manual and don't worry about being "screwed" by the dealer. Just make sure he does what needs to be done so the bike will have a long life.

maint. is expensive, if I were you and if you plan on keeping that bike for awhile go to your local dealer and get the extended service warenty. Trust me it's worth it if your going to follow the manufactures maint. scheduale. Your talking without it around five six hundred dollars on some maint. My first service cost $90 just for a oil change and sink the carbs. So after that I bought the extended service.

Rocky, I dont know what to tell ya about the service of your bike, but I will say DONT take it to HKS off of Lake Forest! Their service dept. sucks.

I dont know if Mission Yamaha services Kawis, but they are really really good and trustworthy.

Two hundred dollars for a full service isn't too bad, at least not for here on Long Island, one of the most expensive places on the east coast! My ZR is in for its 600 mile service and it will cost something in that area to get it done.

Rocky, I didnt have a problem with the ownership of HKS, and they have ONE good tech. but when I wrecked my F4, they wanted to rebuild it for the profit! When I took it to Champion in Costa Mesa, they said it was totalled no question. I have heard bad stories about their service before too. Are you going to use Mission? I used to take my PWCs there and I know just from hanging out that they have a few techs. that are team mechanics and really know their stuff.

The first service should consist of changing the oil and filter, checking the steering head torque, checking the various clamps and hoses, and checking the throttle and clutch adjustment, and the driveline. Checking the valves should not happen until at least 7500mi, and would be a waste of your money at this point. The single most important aspect of this first service is to change the oil & filter.

PS Harry, enjoying that ZX12?
