NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!. Just say you hit the front fender of a car that pulled out in front of you. Instead of, say, sailing across the hood inches or so above it, the airbag on your bike throws you 30 ft above the hood. Which would you rather do, sailing 3-4 ft off the ground or 30 ft off the ground.
A better idea for airbags for bikes. Put airbags completely around a car to cushion anything the car hits or gets hit by. Or maybe make auto-inflation riding suits.
Personally I hate airbags. The seatbelts are good enough. If my truck had an airbag when I hit a deer in 96, I would of ended up upside-down in a ditch since it would have blown my hands off of the wheel in a turn at 50mph .

Where can I get one of those auto-inflation riding suits? That sounds kinda cool. Every time a guy lays his bike down he blows up like the Michelin man, imagine that. Hahahaha Maybe the Government should pass laws requiring these things.

Bite your tongue! A Japanese company has been developing inflatable suits for some time, and there are plenty of morons in the government that would sign that law in a heartbeat!

Rob plese don't take offense. This is not a flame.

If you think that seatbelts are enough and air bags are a waste then you should try eating dinner with an Emergency Room employee every night. There are exceptions to everything. I have been told of instances where motorcycle helmets have caused more damage due to inertial forces. These exceptions are very rare. The case with the deer sounds like one of those exceptions and I'm glad it worked out for you. Children are also put at a significant risk if exposed to the forces of airbags.

I also don't buy into the motorcycle airbags. Not enough testing in my opinion.

We have to be careful using UK stats for comparison. They have many, many more motorcycles and scooters over there and different driving conditions. Not to mention the dumbasses in Britain drive on the wrong side of the road. No wonder the cars are pulling out in front of them.

Go check out James Bond The World Is Not Enough. He has a cool inflatable suit. Certainly is just a movie but gets you thinking...

Like Tristan said, the inflatable suit is a reality, though I believe it is still in the development stages. I've seen it on the web somewhere. I'll try to find the link.

As for airbags, I don't know how the triggering device is set up, but I would have to doubt that hitting a deer would cause deployment, unless you were maybe driving a Ford Fiesta (regardless of whether it was Type R Fiesta or not). My wife's BMW 528I took one hell of a shot from a Toyota Tundra, and, thankfully, not one of it's 8 (or is it 10?) airbags deployed.

Just some mindless chatter.

I read an article about a year or so ago I think where the ECU was thinking of making them mandatory along with several other crazy ideas for motorcycles.
