This was posted to the Ducati mail list. I have gotten permission from the person to cross-post it here.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Aril, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><HR>Well folks...

One of my distributors is trying to pull "exclusive importer" weight with me and force me to withdrawl advertising the name of their product on my website and is also demanding that I charge full retail for their product.

...

Quite a few of you have e-mailed me with curiosity about this subject, so I'll go ahead and post some more information. Remember folks, I sell parts out of passion... I do need to pay bills, but I made a lot more money writing C code than pimping Duck parts.

...

When people like Arai and now this importer get so arrogant as to think that they are god, they lose sight of the fact that little guys like me who choose to minimize the profit margain are free advertising. The more your product is "out there" the more people will see it and want it. Further, the importer is making their money no matter what. I don't want to hear about protecting other dealers. Puuu-leeeez. People cater to their market and will
get their share if they treat their customers with care.

I have decided that it is against my policy to simply charge retail to my customers. The importer has a general policy against drop shipping, which removes all incentive for a customer to buy the pipes from me at the same price but wait longer.

I looked again at the tirerack.com website and decided that I just don't want to deal with this situation.

It may not be *that* wise of a decision on my part, but I've included the e-mail from the importer/distributor at the end of this message. In the end, he'll only benefit due to the increased awareness of their presence. I'll still sell their product, only with markedly decreased enthusiasm.

I've already removed pricing of their prodcut from my catalog. Along with all of the applications and part numbers. It will be replaced with a simple line that reads, "If you want to sound like Ben, visit the Leo Vinci webpage and I'll make you a deal on their pipes."

I'm not cool enough,
Chris

Howza bout we all email the GM of Indigo Sports and voice our opinion of his company's policy, perhaps 400-500 emails might "enlighten him".

Thumbs down

I'm not sure because the memory is still kind of fuzzy but, the last time I thought my sh*t didn't stink along came a stiff wind and promptly reminded me that this is not the case
Who wants to get the fan? It's really impressive to see yet another company acting like Hardley Dollarson.

Well, let me say this for the record. I am not leading any rebellion here. I just thought I would pass along some interesting news. I do think that this situation stinks, for sure. If a company can sell a product, they should be able to advertise that they sell that product. If Leo Vinci doesn't want the advertising, and especially doesn't want the recommendation from the reseller, then fine, we just won't buy thier product.

But I would (just for legal reasons) like to say that I am not endorsing any kind of official boycott or mail-bomb.

With that said, I would be happy to see a boycott executed on this supplier.

Buser, what's your address? I just got a set of Termi's and they won't fit my bike . The dealer said they were for a '68 Rupp and/or a 748 tribimonoposto. You're welcome to them. I'll even pay the shipping!

From the business side of things, the reason for establishing a minimum retail price is to keep the percieved value of whatever item high.

If everyone sold the exhaust for the same price, yours the same low price at Indigo Sports, there would be no less reason for your customers to buy from you and enjoy your convenience and service. Buy from the MAN or buy from your local guy--most would support the local guy.

Your own business would make a few extra duckets as well.

What price-setters fear is that if everyone sells their product for a reduced price, there begins to be pressure to lower the distributors (Indigo sports') wholesale pricing, and they make less money.

The bicycle industry has this all over and I guess I see both sides of it. Just some fill in info for everyone.

If everyone would like to "pitch-in" and buy me a new set of titanium Termi's, I'd be happy to remove my Leo Vinci bazooka's.

Make your checks payable to "Dan's Immediate Corporate Knock-down Embargo Deception" or "DICKED" for short.

Thanks again for your support!
