I need some help.

I took off my windscreen today which meant removing the two bolts which hold the headlight up. Well, the one on the left went back in okay, but the one on the right just refuses to catch anything. I can see something in there that look like it has threads, but I can get this damn bolt to thread into it. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about here? I know this is a very specific question, but I'm hoping that lots of bikes have headlights like this and some one will know what I'm rambling about. Anyway, any help is apreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure exactly what you are taking about. I don't know that bike. What it sounds like to me, is one of two thing. The bolt is striped. Or the Nut or hole you are tying to put it into is striped.

1) Replace that whole pice if nut or hole is striped. Proalby not want you want to do.

2) Go to you local auto parts store and see if they have a thread repair kit.

3) Whats on the other side, If you have some clearence. Pound the dam bolt though the hole, and put a nut on the other end.

If you can't get it though the hole with a hammer. Get a bigger hammer.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm still rather confused. I'm going to solve this problem the only way I know how: by having someone over who is mechanically inclined.

My windscreen holes were polka-dotted, not striped...

Take bolt you have and match it with another, longer bolt of same diameter and thread pitch. Metric bike, so I am guessing a 5mm x .8 or 6mm x 1 bolt. You can rob something off your bicycle or go buy one at Home Depot, etc.

I'd bet nothing is stripped/striped/dotted, but that the "nut" fell back in a bit and is just not close enough to end of the bolt you are poking at it. Two options

1) If longer bolt works, leave it.

2) If longer bolt works, but doesn't match, splooge some shoe-goo or silicone or sticky booger in there when nut gets pulled "up" with longer bolt. Now remove bolt without pushing nut in and re-install proper, shorter bolt.

What'cha doin with a windscreen on a 919 anyway?

Well, it's not a big windscreen. It's the Hondaline one. I think it actually looks pretty cool, and it works very well.

Anyway, I got it all figured out. All I had to do was have the pipe-fitter from work come over to help me. He had to take the headlight apart, screw it into place while holding the bolts on the inside, and then assemble it again while it was attached to the bike. What a pain. Glad I can finally ride again, though.
