Speedo replacement legalities

Was at the dealer today to get a ballpark figure on what my bike is worth on a trade in and told the guy that it didn't have the original speedo. Old one crapped out at about 3800 miles and ever since then I have just added new miles to that number to get an actual mileage reading for tags. The guy seemed really concerned about this and said he has to check it out for fear of mileage fraud when he sells it. When I got it swapped out, that's the only thing that they did. They gave me no paperwork about it or stamped the old miles on the frame. Am I going to have any problems with this? Thanks, Terry

There should be section in the title transfer regarding odometer readings. Here in KY, for example, both the buyer and seller must sign off on the reading and verify that either the mileage is correct or is not correct as indicated. Fraud would only come into play if you stated the mileage as "10,000" knowing full well that it was really "14,000" and you signed off on the mileage indicated as being correct.

You are being totally upfront from the beginning. There should be no problems. Check with your local DMV to see what the procedure is for your state.
