aftermarket rim interchangeability?
Aftermarket rims are really expensive. It seems like with 17" rims being standard for sportbikes now, that there would be a way to move rims from my, for example, 2001 zx6r to new 2005 R6. I'm looking at the websites and there are different model numbers for every bike, even different years of same bike. Is it possible to move your rims to a different model bike with a kit or something?? I can't find an answer anywhere.
I would imagine the aftermarket manufacturer would make the hub as thin as safely possible to minimize manufacturing costs (economy of scale) and just bolt in varied thickness spacers or something to fit the rim between the forks/swingarms of different bikes... then the consumer could just bolt in the appropriate spacer for their new bike? At least able to move from jap bike to jap bike or euro bike to euro bike if there are different bolt patterns? I understand there probably isn't a universal bolt pattern, but at least a semi-standard one for all 600cc or all 1000cc?
Lighter wheels seem really desirable but I want the option of swapping them to the new bike when an upgrade happens if I'm going to spend that much money! Does one manufacturer permit this while others don't? Why can't rims be swapped if they can't??
