Ironman Triathlon training, pace bike

I did the coolest thing Saturday morning.

An Ironman triathlete headed to Ironman Austria July 15 asked me to help him pace for speed intervals on his road bicycle.
We got on a freshly paved stretch of flat road.
We started off, went up to 30 mph, I pointed my left mirror at him so I could see his speed. We went 2.5 miles, turned around. We did that like 7 times.
He said the draft was wide and long, he was tucked in aero bars pedaling like mad!
This dude was just like Lance Armstrong, he was going all out.

Meanwhile, I'm sitting in 2nd gear at 3k rpms....

It was fun, I had never done anything like that before!

I've done a lot of TRI's, and have um... occasionally ridden a little to close to the rider in front of me (drafting is illegal in TRI's)...

But even on bicycles, two riders can ride faster and farther than one! WOW, I would have loved to try riding behind a motorcycle, that's gotta pull a lot of air behind it.... ever see the guy who was drafting behind a semi-truck at like 125mph?

But I am perplexed, what was the training point of drafting a motorcycle? I've done an Ironman (GFT '98), and for speed and distance, there is no substitute for just doing the miles and some hill work (grin and spin)...

Seems to me you're bud's training on the bike is kinda like training for the run on a treadmil... what I mean is too easy. You know you can run faster on a treadmill dont you?

I think it was to pace him through the intervals, the purpose I mean. YEs the drafting makes it easier... so that part was not ummm, harder

It was all motivational I believe. Seeing something right in front of you pull away the second you slack off during interval training.

Like a coach that waits until the team is exhausted and them runs with them yelling at them saying, "you gonna let an old fat f**k out run you, huh? huh!"
(wow, where did that come from?)

I do know that Lance goes avg. like 32 mph during some timetrials...without the draft...ditto Jan Ullrich. Thats crazy.

Anyhoo, Ironman California will be on ESPN(2?) July 15th... they aren't airing the Austria one until september.

I did my first ones this year 2 OD's and I swam in a relay team at Eagleman, and another 9/22/01... just a rookie!!
