I just assumed owning a Ducati required a sense of humor!

Default cam failure on 748s

One of the bike mags had a note from a guy that had the cams fail on his 748. Seems the 748 runs at higher rpms than the other 916,996, etc... and the chrome plating fails on some of them. Kinda odd story. Ducati fixed it but required him to sign a form saying he would not talk about it, nondisclosure? I guess. Most of the bike reviews said for the money the 996 was the way to go. You gotta keep the 748 screeming and its not that much smaller than a 916,996. good luck whatever you do.

8UELL Thanks for the reply, but I got a CBR900RR back in March to replace the Katana 600. Since then I have heard several horror stories about Ducatis. I still want one, but I'm very happy with my choice so far.

When I can afford a slightly used 996 or a new next gen 996, then I'll make the investment. Gotta have some kind of warranty, and also have a backup bike.

And most of these stories come from people who have no experince with Ducati motorcycles, and heard about it at squid-night when some guy they don't even know started spouting off about how his friend's cousin's girlfriend's sister's ex-husband knew a guy that had problems with his Ducati, which happened to be an abused and neglected bike with a salvage title.

My statement was based on a few guys that owned or own Ducatis. One of them sold a very nice 95 CBR900rr with a 98 motor and a custom made VFR swingarm. He sold it for a 748 back in March or April and the Ducati has been in the shop ever since. I think he only got to ride it once or twice. So far he is out a few grand for repairs and is disappointed. I feel for him. I might have done the same thing. He is looking into the lemon laws for his state.

I still love Ducati so don't get me wrong. I don't think they are bad bikes in themselves, but I think you need to be more careful in choosing a used one, and more involved in the maintenence process. I'm not ready for that right now.

If you are not a mechanic, and don't have patience to wait for parts, I'd still stay clear of Ducati. But with the CBR as a daily rider, I think I can squeeze one in the paddock once the financial part works itself out.
